Autism Estimated at 5.5 per 1,000

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recently released a study indicating the prevalence rates for Autism in the United States. 5.5 out of 1,000 children have been diagnosed with autism past estimates have ranged from 1 to 9 out of 1, 000.

This is the first in a series of studies to be done be the Atlanta-based CDC. There has been recent debate about whether a preservative used in vaccines are linked to an increase in prevalence of these disorders. The CDC is first considering if there is a statistically significant increase in autism. The results of this study my also include autism spectrum disorders such as Aspergers and pervasive developmental disorder because of their relationship to autism.
